Student Support Services

The federally funded Student Support Services (SSS) Program provides services to low-income and/or first-generation college students. Through its services the program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. Eligible students are referred to the program from a variety of sources, such as admissions, a high school counselor, a community college advisor, or an Appalachian faculty member.  Enrolled students can also refer themselves to the program.  The SSS program may also provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants.  The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and to help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.

Services provided by the program include:

  • A scholarship program for freshmen and sophomores who receive the Pell Grant
  • Academic advising and support from orientation to graduation
  • Priority registration
  • Academic tutoring
  • Academic workshops for freshmen students
  • A supportive mentor program in the first year
  • Help with course selection, financial aid planning, and career planning
  • Learning Skills Services
  • Career Development

  • Technology Support

Support for Student Support Services is provided by Appalachian State University and the U.S. Department of Education.
